PRESS
RELEASE
On behalf of the over 300
minority ethnic groups in northern Nigeria, we congratulate the President for
setting up a committee to look into ways of addressing the herders’farmers’
conflict in the country.
While we hope the committee
will do a good job, we are skeptical and apprehensive of why such a committee
is set up in the first place and doubt if its assignment is not to execute a
pre-plannedprogramme.
There are of course three
submissions we are aware of.
a.
The resolution of the national conference
2014 on the herders-farmers conflict.
b.
The submission of the national security adviser
2014on the herders-farmers conflict.
c.
The demand of the Fulani herdsmenon the
herders-farmers conflict.
We believe the solution to
the problem of the herder-farmers conflict lies in a collective resolution of
the parties to the conflict and not simply an expert document or a demand by
one side to the conflict.
As we wish the committee
good speed and Gods guidance with their assignment, we believe the approach of
the President towards resolving the herders-farmer conflict will be a clear statement
of which direction the Federal Government will take and a test of the sincerity
of the statement made by the President;his ExcellencyMohammaduBuhari that he
belongs to no one and that he belongs to everybody.
Meanwhile, we call on all
Nigerians to cooperate with the committee by making their position known and
providing the committee with relevant information to ensure it reaches an unbiased
position on the issue.
CONACEDA secretariat has also instructed its national
conference implementation technical committee to liase with the Committee,
Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the National Assembly on the issue.
